ADX was born in Laguna Beach and is headquartered in Dana Point so needless to say we come from the “Brand” epicenter of the universe. We also come from the fun epicenter of the universe. Summertime in Orange County is something to behold, whether it’s the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Downhill skate madness on the hills of Laguna, scantily-clad hotties up and down it’s beaches, Trestles going off or after dark debochery in town, it’s all here. We are privy to special events that the outside world doesn’t get to be a part of, industry parties, screenings, impromtu gatherings and last week, an insane “concert in the park”.
Many communities have summer concert series and many find some decent talent to play one of the weekends of the summer. There are many advantages to being from Laguna Beach, for one, last week’s concert in the park. Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters was going to play. Wait what? Exactly, and word that Taylor Hawkins was going to play travels through our small town fast and within hours the rumor mill was in full effect and it was all over Facebook, “Taylor Hawkins Taylor Hawkins Taylor Hawkins Foo Fighters Foo Fighters Foo Fighters”, buzz buzz buzz. This was no rumor though, Taylor would indeed be playing in the concert in the park called “The Police Experience” on Sunday. It built high expectations from those who knew about it and Sunday’s show didn’t let anyone down.
If any band is going to cover the Police, they’d better be damn good. They’d also better have a great drummer to do Stewart Copeland justice! They found the right man of course, and Taylor Hawkins lit it up for hours. In true Laguna style, Taylor showed up and played wearing only boardies he put on a show with as much passion as if he was at a sold out Madison Square Garden. They started the show with older, more obscure, fast-paced, raw, early Police songs and got people fired up.
Plenty of spirits were flowing as the salty dogs, Sli dawgs and pirates did it Laguna style. A totally informal summer-time party vibe was in effect. There were the classic showings of horrific dance skills amuck and this just added to the silliness.
The Groms were out in full force, climbing up on the grassy knoll the band played on, getting as close to their Foo Fighter’s famed drummer as possible.
They played well over their “city approved” time limit and gave us all a truly memorable summer evening.
